Roma Ministering to Roma in Slovakia

AGWM personnel in Slovakia, John and Daralena Bean, hosted a team of 39 Roma (Gypsy) from New Jersey who came to minister to their own people in Slovakia. They were able to go into 4 new villages and share the Gospel. The Roma were so eager to hear the gospel. In the village of Kamena Polruba, the mayor of the city came with several others and dedicated their lives to Christ. But there is an interesting back story with this Roma team! About 25 years ago, there was a young Roma couple in New Jersey who wanted to get married. They went to the Orthodox Church and asked the pastor if he would marry them and he refused to do so. It happened that one of the family members of this couple knew of an Assemblies of God pastor, so they went to him and asked if he would marry them. He consented to do so under some stipulations. 1. He wanted the couple who was getting married to bring their entire family to the marriage counseling sessions. 2. After they were married, they had to agree to bring their entire Roma family to one Sunday morning service at the Assemblies of God church. They agreed to the stipulations and sometime later after they were married, there were 80 Roma who came to that Pastor’s A/G church as they promised. The pastor preached and all 80 of them gave their lives to Christ.

Out of that group God called several of these Roma to be preachers and pastors. When the Beans were home on Furlough in 2013, they were contacted by this Roma Pastor who had heard of their work with the Roma in Slovakia. They have earnestly been trying to find out where their people originated and where some of their people may live in Europe. So the Beans went to New Jersey and preached for them and found out very quickly that they had many traditions and cultural similarities as those who live in Slovakia. God brought them back to minister to their own people!

Revival Continues Among the Roma of Slovakia

Twenty two new believers were baptized recently from the church in Sol’. AGWM Personnel, John Bean, preached the baptismal service in the Roma church. Although some predicted that the Roma revival would be short-lived and would not have much effect, a mighty move of God is still apparent among this marginalized people group with a fervent hunger to know God at a deeper level. Sadly, there are hundreds of villages yet to be reached and not enough labors to reach them. The Slovak Mayor in the city of Sol' came to the Beans Bible/English class which they teach for the Roma children. The mayor came to meet and thank them for working with the Roma children of his city. God at work is evident amongst the Roma.

The Beans visited the village of Jakubovany for the first time. This village has 3,000 Roma! In the past, it has been a very violent village. Also, it has some of the worst living conditions the Beans have witnessed yet among the Roma. There are approximately 40 people in the village who are believers. They are planning to start an outreach and discipleship ministry in the Fall.

Austrian Youth Minister to Roma in Slovakia

A team of Austrian youth came to minister to the Roma (Gypsies) of Slovakia. AGWM personnel, John Bean, whose ministry focuses on the Roma tells of the great blessing these young people were. They helped strip paint off of a container building which was purchased to house small group meetings as well as a place for children’s ministry in this Roma project. The youth also did children’s programs in four different villages in the area throughout the week. John Bean’s family were much involved in these programs, with his daughter being the translator for the leaders and the youth. It was a busy and fruitful week for these young Austrians. It was the first time that some of these Roma women were out of the country of Slovakia. They were so excited to get to see the city of Vienna and to worship and sit in sessions with people from 15 different nations. We all returned to Slovakia with a renewed passion to reach the children of this nation.

Pentecostal Revival among the Gypsies across Europe

One of the most dynamic and powerful works of the Holy Spirit in our day certainly is the Pentecostal revival among the Gypsies Streams of this revival started in the decade of the 1950s. God began to pour out His Spirit upon the diverse ethnic groups of Gypsies in Europe and around the world. Because of prejudice and ill reputation, many leaders were skeptical about the conversion of Gypsies, but over time, these leaders recognized that God is no respecter of persons. France has more than 150 000 baptized Gypsy adults. There are some 2150 preachers trained in their own Bible school with almost 300 students studying every year. The French missionary work, called ‘Life and Light’ (founded by Pastor Clément Le Cossec), reaches into 30 countries, supporting over 30 missionaries in Eastern Europe, Central Asia and India. The French Gypsies brought the Gospel to neighboring countries such as Belgium, The Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, and Italy.

Spain has also experienced phenomenal growth as today there are over 200 000 baptized believers, some 600 Gypsy churches and 2500 preachers. The “Gitanos ” have evangelized Portugal and South America as well. England has been marked by the same kind of development since 1975. Today there are over 15 000 born-again Gypsies and Travellers, many of whom were instrumental in reaching Ireland, Canada, and the USA. . In Eastern Europe, we see similar growth. In Romania, there are some 110 000 converts and hundreds of Gypsy churches with about 200 preachers. Bulgaria has some 70 000 Gypsy believers and over 120 Gypsy churches and preachers. Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary are currently experiencing a mighty move of the Holy Spirit. There are over 10 million Gypsies in Eastern Europe. Only 3% have knowledge of the Gospel.

There is also a growing work in the Scandinavian countries, such as Norway, Sweden and Finland. TV programs are broadcast in the Gypsy language in more than 15 cities throughout Russia and Eastern Europe. There are some 40 million Gypsies in the world, half of whom are in India. To this day, 700 to 800 000 Gypsies from various ethnic groups know Jesus Christ as their Savior, with a total of 6 500 preachers and pastors. The task to reach this vast mission field is still unfinished. Gypsies have their own language, mindset and traditions. Please pray the Lord of the harvest to send many more workers to these people for whom Jesus died!
