The Holy Spirit at Work in Italy

The Evangel University choir came to minister this year at the International Church of Rome. When Pastor Bob Rose of AGWM thanked the choir, for some reason he also asked his wife, Lynne, to thank the group in Japanese. Afterward, an Italian university student asked if Lynne could meet with his Japanese teacher, Akiko, whom he sensed was unhappy. This would just be an introduction that could possibly develop into a friendship and at some point, Lynne might be able to witness to this lady of Christ’s love and offer of salvation. At first, the meeting was a little stilted, but then Bob began to tell the story of Lynne’s mother, the daughter of a Japanese Buddhist priest and how she became a Christian. Akiko began to ask questions so Lynne shared how her mother had grown up in the temple but had not found peace. When her mother left home to go to the university, she began to search for truth. One day, she met an American (Lynne’s father) who led her to the Lord. Lynne told Akiko that later she herself went to Japan as a missionary and visited her Buddhist priest grandfather many times and that her uncle, who was also a Buddhist priest, was almost persuaded to come to Christ. He would weep under the conviction of the Holy Spirit but felt he could not convert in order to protect his son’s future in Buddhism. When Lynne’s grandfather died, her uncle asked her to give a speech in Japanese at the funeral and then pray in English.

Akiko was very surprised because this request was very unusual in Japan. Lynne had given the speech and prayed in front of 500 Buddhist adherents and priests. As she prayed, she heard movement in the crowd; thinking she had made an error in her speech and people were laughing, she simply continued to pray. When she finished, she discovered that the Japanese congregation was openly weeping and her uncle was sobbing. That evening at dinner, her uncle said to her, “The funeral was recorded and I have watched it 3 times today; every time you begin to pray, I weep…why?” She told her uncle that it was not her but the Holy Spirit who had touched his heart.

When Lynne said these words, Akiko became fidgety. The Roses soon realized she was struggling not to cry. Finally tears began to flow down her cheeks. Lynne continued to tell the story of how the Holy Spirit dealt with her uncle and many of the people temple that day. As Akiko listened, the power and presence of the Holy Spirit came down in such a powerful yet gentle way! Lynne asked Akiko if she would like to invite Jesus into her heart. There in the largest and busiest train station in Italy, Akiko immediately agreed and as they prayed together, the Holy Spirit touched her heart over and over again. What started out as a casual meeting became a divine appointment as God’s truth became a reality and His great plan for Akiko’s life unfolded!

Finding Peace, Joy and Forgiveness in Italy

For years, Maria had been one of those Christians who would be up one day and down the next. Pastors Bob and Lynne Rose, AGWM personnel in Italy, prayed for her fervently and slowly she has become more steadfast in her walk with the Lord. Yet one thing that has been consistent about is her witness and testimony to those who need Jesus.

Pastors Bob and Lynne Rose, AGWM personnel in Italy, prayed for her fervently and slowly she has become more steadfast in her walk with the Lord. Yet one thing that has been consistent about is her witness and testimony to those who need Jesus.

One day Maria met Nuuro, a refugee from Africa, and a friendship between them grew; she helped Nuuro in many ways including giving her food and finding housing for her. As they grew closer, Maria began to share with her how much Jesus meant to her. Because of their relationship, Nuuro would listen but would not respond. But the more Maria shared, the hungrier for God Nuuro became. She began to see how vibrant Maria’s  life was and how precious Jesus was to her. Nuuro began to examine her own life and realized that she did not have the peace and forgiveness in her heart like Maria.

Her relationship with her god was shallow and dissatisfying. So Maria encouraged her to come to church.

Pastor Bob had been doing a series on the 12 disciples of Jesus. On the night Nuuro came, he spoke on James. As Bob preached, Nuuro hung on every word. She listened as the life of James unfolded; how he was one of the Sons of Thunder, wanted to call fire down from Heaven on the Samaritans for refusing to accommodate Jesus, he was one of the ones who wanted to sit next to Jesus in Heaven and in the end, he was the first martyr of the Christian church. These kinds of experiences, emotions and reactions were very similar to what she had learned in her religion. But to hear how this angry, aggressive and ambitious activist had allowed the Master to temper his heart and taught him to be a servant, sensitive and humble, was a totally new concept to Nuuro. She became so intrigued and eager to learn more about God.

AND_Group_Photo.JPGAfter the service, Pastor Bob greeted her and immediately Nuuro said, “I need something in my life!” She began to tell Bob her story: how she was raised to be religious but had found no joy or peace. She asked, “Can you help me find what I need in my life and true reality in God?”  Pastor Bob presented John 14:6 when Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life.” As he shared about Jesus, she asked more questions about how Jesus could help her in her life. He told her the first step was to know Jesus as her Savior and Lord. He led her in a simple prayer of salvation. She hungrily repeated each word and at the conclusion, the peace of God rested on her face.

Nuuro was given a new Bible and instructed her on how to learn more about her new and personal relationship with God through the Word of God. Nuuro is growing in the Lord and has a hunger to get beyond her past and be discipled.

Children Everywhere in Italy!

International Christian Fellowship, (ICF)Padova, Italy has a great ministryto children that has helped the church grow tremendously. AGWM Personnel, Steve and Patti Gray, tell about their Vacation Bible School (VBS) this past summer that ministered to 105 kids. The Grays did not advertise the coming VBS, but parents began to sign up their children right after Easter. They had to rent additional facilities to house all the children's ministries. Most all of the children had accepted Christ into their lives by the end of the summer sessions and several were filled with the Holy Spirit.

International Christian Fellowship, (ICF)Padova, Italy has a great ministry to children that has helped the church grow tremendously.

VBS_2013_-_3.jpgThe English summer school/VBS was conducted 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, for 7 weeks. The children's ages ranged from 4-14 and came from several
different countries and church backgrounds.  These included the countries of Romania, Albania, Nigeria, Cameroon, Philippines, Italy, Sri Lanka and from
the Orthodox, Catholic, Buddhist, and Pentecostal churches.

Six short-term workers came who served for 3 months as well as other teams from the United States that came for a month, and some for one week.  Teens
from the Gray's church helped with translation needs. Every week featured a different theme such as Kingdom Rock, Cowboy, Jungle, Creation, Swamp etc.

In the morning various VBS activities were done such as crafts, games, Bible stories, skits and worship.  In the afternoons, the kids were taught to read and write English. Story time was included for the younger kids and drama and human videos was featured for the older kids. The highlight of the week
was ice cream on Fridays.

Parents testified that their children loved the school and begged to come. They were excited that they were learning to read the Bible and decided to
start coming to ICF.

VBS_2013_-_1.jpgOne afternoon one of the team leaders gave his testimony about how he was a bully and ended up in jail before Jesus changed his life. He asked if any felt they were a bully and if they wanted Jesus to change them.  All the boys and a couple of girls who were always fighting or in trouble raised their hands and came to the altar for prayer. Every child whom the Grays knew had this problem raised their hand and came forward. The Spirit of God was so strong as the leaders began to pray for them and they began to cry and then huddled in groups and prayed for themselves for about 30 minutes. Parents had to wait for the children, but as those kids left school late that day, they left as new creations. It was so wonderful to watch.

Patti Gray also relates that they had "purity" talks with the older kids this year and the girls received red roses to let dry and keep for their future husbands as a symbol of their purity.

Most of the children who enrolled in the VBS were born in Italy...they are Italy's future. What a better future they will have knowing Jesus and English...better jobs, better families. Italy will benefit from having honest, God fearing citizens. This investment of time and energy into children will reap eternal results.

Celebrating Growth in Italy

On May 12, 2012 The International Church of Rome founded by AGWM personnel, Bob and Lynne Rose, commemorated its second anniversary and what a celebration it was! The Roses had returned to Rome

2nd_Anniversary_Photo_2.jpgOn May 12, 2012  The International Church of Rome founded by AGWM personnel, Bob and Lynne Rose, commemorated its second anniversary and what a celebration it was!  The Roses had returned to Rome to renew their residency documents and were able to rejoice with the church. Ten nations were represented and there were special songs in Italian, French, Swahili, Japanese, and Igbo. The food from 10 nations was incredible!

The day of celebration witnessed the addition to the family of God.  An Italian man, Maurizio, heard singing and wandered into the church. He had heard the Gospel message before but had never accepted Christ as his Savior. After the service, Pastor Benoit, the graduate student who now is the pastor of ICR, and Carmen, the worship leader, spoke to him about his need of salvation. At the end of their conversation, Maurizio asked Jesus into his heart! He had stumbled into the church filled with such emptiness but left with the breath of God in his life!

The Roses are rejoicing that God is building His church. When the International Church of Rome was planted in 2010, the Roses started the work alone. Two years later, a Bible school graduate has been installed as pastor, there is a worship leader,  a church secretary/treasurer and a prayer coordinator. An awakening is happening! People have come to Christ and the Lord has added to His church!
