Standing on Faith in Germany

On Saturday morning when it began to snow, the outlook for the Go-Church’s kick-off service in Germany didn’t seem very positive. The team had prepared. They had prayed. They had fasted. They had invited one person after another for the past 3 months. And they were standing in the faith that God was planning something great for this first public event as a new church.

They had fasted. They had invited one person after another for the past 3 months. And they were standing in the faith that God was planning something great for this first public event as a new church.

But all day the snow kept piling up. And so did the cancelation calls. Roughly 40 people said, “Thanks for the invite, but I just can’t go out in this at night.” Regardless, the team kept preparing, kept trusting - God would bring the ones who most needed to be there.

One might say there was reason for doubt, but faith is the opposite of doubt. Hebrews 11:1 says, “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” (ESV) Faith doesn’t look at the obstacles. Faith focuses on the heart of God - and his heart has been crying out for this city in Germany.

DSC_0029-2.jpgRegardless of the fact that 8 inches of snow had dropped throughout the day, 100 people showed up that evening! (This is a HUGE number by German standards.) Most of them were non-Christians. Several had never before been in any kind of worship service in their entire lives. It’s as if this community has been waiting for a life-giving church....and God was waiting to fill it!

Pieces of the Puzzle - Germany

God builds puzzles! This story of one woman illustrates this so well. Kathi grew up in Berlin under very sad circumstances with parents who were alcoholics. Her situation was so bad that on her own initiative, she went to live in a children‘s home at the age of 14. Some years ago she moved to Dresden with her partner and three kids. Sadly, her partner was not much different from her parents and life was a struggle for Kathi. She is a strong person and has always been a fighter, so she was determined that her kids were going to have a better childhood than she did.

Sadly, her partner was not much different from her parents and life was a struggle for Kathi. She is a strong person and has always been a fighter, so she was determined that her kids were going to have a better childhood than she did.

One daughter decided to move back to Berlin to live with her father since the current partner at home was doing drugs From other Moms in the neighborhood, Kathi heard about the Kidsclub which our AGWM personnel, the Walents are involved with and so she started coming.  But her oldest daughter Josi (then 10) felt it was “too childish“ for her so they did not show up at the Kidsclub for a year. Then at the end of September when some members of the  team went around to invite children to Kidsclub,  Josi answered saying  “I want to be baptized, can I do that in your church?”  They had gone to Berlin to attend a wedding the week before and stayed in a hotel.  There Josi  found a book, a Gideon Bible, and started reading it when she was bored – and she couldn‘t stop! She took it home and had been devouring the Bible every day since.

DSCN6287-2.jpgThe Walents invited them to church and Kathi and her two daughters came. They said they had never before experienced such a wonderful service . Josi kept coming every Sunday. As things got even worse at their home, the Walents invited them to come to a family camp in October. Kathi and the two girls came. The last night there, Kathi and Josi sat down on the “blessing seat“ in the prayer room.   Christina Walent asked what they wanted prayer for, and Josi cried and said she would so much like for God to accept her. After talking to them, Josi and Kathi gave their hearts to the Lord. All of heaven threw a party as God wrote two new names in the Book of Life!

The Walents are in the process of  getting them help with their family situation. Good things have been set in motion and Kathi is so grateful for the support she has found among her new brothers and sisters in God‘s family. She has also been paired  up with a mentor to help her grow spiritually. Many different people were a part of this puzzle God built - everyone put in their special piece. And God keeps building. Time will tell more as to what God has in store for them!

Students for Christ - Germany

AGWM personnel in Germany, John and Kristen Koeshall relate how God is at work among the University students in Erfurt. From time to time, student groups from the United States come to help in ministry and outreach with Students for Christ in Europe. One of those American students, Molly, shares an exciting story from her second trip.

"Two years ago I met a girl who was not involved with Students for Christ. Over the past few years we stayed in touch. During our trip to Erfurt this year she came and visited for the day. We had incredible conversation. God was on the move! I could feel Him speaking to her in incredible and beautiful ways. This girl, with whom I had only one conversation  two years ago, was opening up to me like a book, sharing things you would only say to a close friend. That night at the weekly meeting, she was deeply moved by the testimonies she heard. She stayed on the next day, even helping us with the outreach on campus. That night as the final outreach event of our trip, we threw a big "Experience Texas Night" party. When one of our team members shared his story, describing how after accepting Jesus into his heart, he'd felt at peace with a weight lifted from his heart, she turned to me and said that that is exactly how she'd felt that morning. I was stunned! In one day through just a couple hours of hanging out she had turned her life over to Jesus! That is unreal! This is how Jesus is longing to move on that campus."

Blessings of Retreat in Germany

AGWM Personnel, Chuck and Marilyn Kackley, minister to our American military personnel, based in Germany. Annually, a retreat for the military is held in Garmisch. This fall there were around 70 participants who attended from the Kackley’s congregation. The retreat is always a highlight for the families as it is a chance to “recharge” spiritual batteries. Military families face unique challenges, and military marriages often suffer due to challenges of deployments and extended times of separation. The Kackleys report that the retreat this year focused on Christian marriages and they are continuing to receive comments about the blessing of the things learned in the sessions.

Retreat.jpgAiyanna, (pictured 3rd from the left in the photo) was diagnosed with a severe skin disorder shortly before coming to the retreat with her family.  She was covered with large red welts all over her body. The doctors had told her parents that it would be a couple of months just trying to get it under control.  At the end of one of the evening services at the retreat, there was a time of praying for healing so Aiyanna’s parents brought her up for prayer. Her young friends stayed around the altar to pray for their friend until late in the evening. It seemed that Aiyanna’s color had improved and everyone left the service believing that God had healed her.  The next morning it was confirmed that in fact, He had!  Her welts were gone and her skin was normal.  She is still enjoying the results of God’s touch!
